What makes Witchfire at Lammas such a disappointment. Many things, but most of all I think it’s an old man’s book, the work of a writer nearing the end of his career, and lacking the energy required to sustain a novel of the quality he’s previously produced. It’s thin, confused, weightless and ultimately vague.

The later book that’s more positive about witchery must be Witchfire at Lammas, and it certainly does fall short of Neill’s standards.
